The Assassination of Gianni Versace episode 2: Andrew Cunanan’s arrival

Versace family

When The Assassination of Gianni Versace episode 2 airs on FX next week, one of the things that you’ll see more of is the series playing around with some of its chronology. While much of The People v. OJ Simpson operated via a straight line, you are probably getting a great sense here already that this is not the same thing. This is a show that will veer off into different directions and offer up a chance to learn some more about who Andrew Cunanan is — both in terms of before the murder and closer to it.

Unfortunately, there’s also a pattern here that FX is showing in promoting these episodes — they don’t have much of an intention in revealing a lot in advance. When it comes to The Assassination of Gianni Versace episode 2, here is what we have insofar as a synopsis goes:

Andrew Cunanan arrives in Miami to stalk Gianni Versace. Written by Tom Rob Smith; Directed by Nelson Cragg

That is not a whole lot to go on, but how much more do you need? The Assassination of Gianni Versace is so much more of an emotional journey than the first American Crime Story season was. The goal here is to give you a better sense of Cunanan’s mind and the journey that got him to that infamous moment. His actions in this episode influence many of the others that come after it. Cunanan is a complicated man wrestling many different things, and getting to play some of these wrinkles is an experience that Darren Criss may cherish.

This is going to be a difficult story for some, given that the brutal nature of murder is not going to be lost over the episodes to some. To others, maybe there is some education here. You can argue over some of the details as presented, but this is a crime that’s been lost somewhat to the sands of time.
