When could a Grey’s Anatomy season 15 renewal be announced?
For starters, really all you have to do is look at the continued ratings success for the ABC series. So far this season Grey’s Anatomy is averaging a 2.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is almost even with what the series drew during the thirteenth season of the show. It’s also just about equal in total viewers. Even with the success of The Good Doctor this year on Monday nights, Grey’s Anatomy still remains ABC’s top-rated scripted show. It’s also still generating more viewers for itself every month thanks to Netflix; there are still people discovering this show, even after so many years, and some of these viewers are being converted over into people who watch live. Netflix has essentially given this show a brilliant second life, not that its other life was anywhere close to over.
So what could be holding up the series getting renewed for a season 15, if anything? The one thing you could look at is the contract status of most of the cast — there are negotiations that have to happen every year around a new season. We don’t foresee there being any issues getting deals done with interested parties, but there will still be negotiations nonetheless and those take time. The great thing about Grey’s Anatomy at the moment is that it seems to have found itself in a groove with the group that it’s got. The majority of the cast appears to be happy, and the writers are finding interesting ways to include all of them in as many different stories as possible. Even if you don’t get a chance to see a major story for an actor for a few weeks, the writers manage to find a different way to include them down the road.
Also, do you really think that ABC is going to end the show right after ordering a spin-off? We foresee there being at least a few years of these two shows coexisting.
How long Grey’s Anatomy lasts depends on its star
When Ellen Pompeo is ready to go, Grey’s Anatomy goes with it. This is really as simple as that. We foresee her wanting to depart at around the time the show starts either losing its steam creatively or commercially … but that’s not happening in either instance right now.
