No Shameless end date in sight after season 9 renewal
So is a Shameless end date being set following the recent season 9 renewal? Because in part of the success, it doesn’t seem like it.
Speaking to reporters at the TCA Winter Press Tour this week, Showtime head David Nevins confirmed (per Entertainment Weekly) that there is potential for the series to run for quite a while still, provided that the ratings remain strong and the cost low enough to keep going:
“I don’t know what the end point of that show is. It’s having its strongest year ever by a long shot. It’s up significantly over last year, so it has grown steadily. A lot of people feel like this was one of its best creative years, too, so as long as it keeps doing that, I’m happy to have them for as long as possible. Shows that show the ability to renew themselves get to stay — if I can afford them.”

Nevins cited in part the series’ success at Netflix (it is one of the few premium cable series to air on Netflix during its run) as one of the reasons for its continued success; however, he also expressed some concern that viewers will think that Shameless is a Netflix show and decide, as a result of this, that they will just wait for it to premiere over there. The one thing that Showtime does have going for it on this front is that Shameless does happen to air on this network a good nine months later than it does on its flagship channel.
For now, our feeling is that the series will get a season 10, and then after that some of the creators and powers that be may decide that it’s best to start considering how to move on.
