Agents of SHIELD season 5: About the big FitzSimmons twist
Maybe we should have assumed that a FitzSimmons engagement would be coming up on the show soon, given that it was one of the potential glimmers of hope amidst a very dark, scary time for SHIELD. Just in this episode alone we had all sorts of near-constant danger — especially for Fitz! The proposal by Fitz was stunning and lovely … just as much as it was that Simmons ended up giving her own proposal back to him in a pretty funny way. It was a perfect microcosm of this couple’s relationship and a reminder as to why it’s one of the best in the world of comic-book TV. It’s not overwrought and filled with angst; they’re just two people who love each other in the midst of having a really difficult job.
In speaking about the big twist to TVLine, Clark Gregg (who also directed this episode) made it clear as to why he was so happy to take this moment on:
“I was excited about that because as a fan of those two, they’ve just been through so much … And they’re both such amazing actors, I just knew that even given all the weird constraints put on the first proposal, they would knock it out of the park and break out hearts. And I love that that heavy, frustrating first proposal gets followed up by the role-reversing, funnier one!”

As for where these two do go from here, we’ve got a pretty good feeling that they’re not going to be walking down the aisle in the near future. The two do have a lot of other trouble to get through, and it’s not exactly like Agents of SHIELD is the sort of show that really stops and gives its characters an opportunity to breathe. Where in the world are they going to have time to even plan a wedding? We certainly don’t see it coming in the weeks ahead.
