Outlander season 4: Colin McFarlane set to play Ulysses
Per Entertainment Weekly, Colin McFarlane — whose TV credits including the likes of Holby City, Casualty, and Doctor Who, is set to play the role. (Warning: Minor book spoilers ahead.) Ulysses is a fascinating character given that he, (like so many others we’ve met through the series) has been able to overcome very difficult times. He was sold into slavery when he was young, but he also is very smart, talented, and understands many matters of the world. He eventually becomes a servant to Aunt Jocasta, who is being played by Orphan Black alum Maria Doyle Kennedy.
Colin is a smart, versatile actor who will bring a lot of humanity to the part — the show is very lucky to have someone of his caliber on board, since he will allow for a lot of great dimension no matter how many episodes he appears in.
McFarlane is the third confirmed new performer appearing in Outlander season 4 — or the fourth, if you consider Rollo the Dog to be a newcomer to the show. Ed Speleers of Downton Abbey fame is set to appear in the role of Stephen Bonnet, a man who is certainly memorable to Diana Gabaldon readers — but not exactly for great reasons. The casting for the series is top-notch, with the show finding just this past year a perfect Young Ian in John Bell, great performers for Marsali and Fergus in Lauren Lyle and Cesar Domboy, and of course a fantastic Mr. Willoughby in Gary Young, who stole many of the scenes that he was a part of on the show.
Outlander is season 4 is in production in Scotland, though eventually it will navigate over to some other parts of Europe. Filming will continue until the late spring/early summer, and the current plan is for the fourth season to premiere on Starz at some point in the fall.
