The Gifted season 2 renewal official at Fox; episode count still unclear

Gifted season 2 renewal coming to Fox

This morning, there was some great news that came out for those looking for The Gifted season 2 to be official — it now is.

Speaking to reporters at the TCA Winter Press Tour, Fox confirmed that the X-Men adaptation, (which stars Amy Acker and Stephen Moyer among others) is going to be coming back for another batch of episodes airing as early as this fall. However, there was no official news regarding the episode count. Our feeling is that there will at least be another thirteen episodes; the run for the show this season, (where it kicked off in the fall only to finish airing in the new year) worked pretty well for it.

There are two specific reactions that CarterMatt wants to celebrate this news now that it’s official.

1. It’s a pleasure to hear that the ratings are so much better than they appear to be on the surface. While a little more than three million viewers are getting a chance to check out new episodes of The Gifted live every week, more than eight million people on average are watching the show with some of the multi-platform numbers included. This is another reminder for all of us that in the modern era of TV, the majority of viewers are watching via some non-traditional means.

2. This renewal signifies further that the impending acquisition of many Fox studio properties by Disney is not having an immediate impact on the future of The Gifted. We are still concerned down the line that there is going to be a hard reset coming for the entire X-Men universe, but that’s something that we presume the producers and Fox as a network will deal with then. There’s a little more room for great stories in the meantime.

The Gifted was the first real attempt by Fox to bring the X-Men universe to their network proper. There is another series within the same franchise in Legion over on FX (which if you haven’t seen it you really should!), but there’s not a deliberate effort to connect the two in any meaningful way. The same goes with the series and some of the feature films.
