Ratings: The Bachelor sinks with Arie Luyendyk Jr.; Lucifer season 3, The Gifted hit lows

Bachelor premiere

Over the years, CarterMatt has said that The Bachelor ratings are not necessarily dependent on the show’s leading man. However, the numbers for Monday night’s premiere may suggest otherwise.

The first episode of the ABC series with Arie Luyendyk Jr. as the lead drew a 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic — while that’s still a solid ratings figure, it’s down more than 25% in the demo from the premiere of Nick Viall’s season last year. It’s also lower than any episode of Nick’s season overall. There is a small caveat here in that Nick’s season didn’t air on New Year’s Day against college football and all sorts of holiday programming; yet, it’s still not something for ABC to celebrate and it signals that the network may have made a mistake when it comes to its decision to bring in a Bachelor who hadn’t been seen on the franchise for the better part of the past five years. We know that there were many viewers out there who didn’t have much of a clue who Arie really was because they weren’t watching back when Emily Maynard was the star of the show.

We do expect The Bachelor ratings to rise next week; as for how much, though, that remains to be seen. The show was still trending on social media last night so there is clearly still plenty of fans talking out there.

Tough ratings elsewhere – This is probably why you can’t read too much into The Bachelor ratings being down. After all, both Lucifer and The Gifted fell to new ratings lows last night with a 0.7, a move likely caused by the holidays. The scheduling for these two shows has been pretty terrible no matter how you look at it. Both of them were off the air since before the holidays, and yet they each came back this week only to then go off the air again next week due to college football. The Gifted will return on January 15 with its two-hour finale; unfortunately, Lucifer season 3 episode 12 is not coming up on Fox until January 22. All of the sitting around/waiting for new episodes is not going to be altogether great for the show’s ratings.

Your Valor update – Amazingly, the CW series still drew a 0.2 rating without Supergirl before it and on a holiday. It’s still not going to get the show a second season, but at least the folks over at the network have something to be happy about with this.
