Will The Magicians season 3 ratings continue positive momentum?

Are The Magicians season 3 ratings going to be magical in their own right? There’s a reason to think that they very well could be, given that this is a show that accomplished a pretty rare feat for a scripted cable entity in season 2: Year-to-year improvement.

For its second batch of episodes, the Syfy drama ended up averaging a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and almost 800,000 live+same-day viewers. These two ratings marked a slim increase over the numbers from the first season, and that had to be something that proved to be a factor in the season 3 renewal. The Magicians is obviously a beloved series and one with a lot of network support behind it, but we do think that it helps when some higher-ups decide that they want you to have that extra feeling of security. You want to feel like there is positive momentum behind you, or a little bit of wind blowing underneath your sails.

It’s with this in mind that our Magicians season 3 ratings expectations are to continue to see things going in the same direction. What’s not to stop season 3 from averaging around 850,000 live viewers a week? While it has a Wednesday timeslot at 9:00 p.m. Eastern that is somewhat competitive, we really don’t think that there are any other shows out there that are direct competition for those viewers. It’s had another year to build some word of mouth, and one of the things that really helps it is that Syfy keeps the seasons fairly short. It’s possible for viewers to catch up and there are certainly many reasons for them to want to do that — CarterMatt does think that the climate is perfect for a show like this because it encourages imagination and, both literally and figuratively, transports you to another world. Escapism is something that we want here and there, especially when the rest of the world can get dark and stressful. This is a brilliant show for that.
