Vikings season 5, Knightfall season 1 ratings fall to lows after Christmas

Vikings season 5Did the Vikings season 5 and Knightfall season 1 ratings take a tumble because of the Christmas holiday, or is there something else that is at play here? It’s certainly worthy of some discussion.

This past Wednesday’s episode of Vikings ended up generating a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and also 1.75 million viewers. These are some of the lowest ratings ever for the series, at least in live+same-day figures, let alone the lowest this season.

As for what happened, the easiest assumption to make here is just that the show was impacted as a result of the holiday break. December 27 is a big travel day, with people trying to get home after the holidays. Some may still have been out with their friends and family instead.

Are there other possibilities? You could argue that this season needs to have some more strong character-based moments, given that you have so many different people all scattered across different places and that makes certain aspects of the show more challenging from a standpoint of social interactions. This was at one point one of the biggest strengths of the series (unusual relationships like with Ragnar and Athelstan), and it’s something that does need to be worked on the rest of the way this season. For the time being, though, we really don’t consider this to be much of a factor in the numbers. This seems to be more due to the holidays, given that Knightfall also fell to some of its lowest ratings to date — Wednesday’s episode was watched by close to 1.1 million viewers and generated a 0.2 rating in the demo. The good news here is that, (as we reported earlier), Knightfall is planning a second season so there’s still hope for the future.

We’ll get a better sense as to how Vikings and Knightfall perform come next week, given that there is no more holiday competition; yet, at the same time there will be some other competition coming via some major networks like NBC and CBS returning to the air after a lengthy break.
