Mad About You revival in talks with Paul Reiser, Helen Hunt

Mad About You revival

We’ll admit that in the midst of all the talk about possible series revivals over the years, the idea of a Mad About You revival is not one that really crossed our mind. While this was one of television’s best comedies at one point in history, that was well over a decade ago. Not only that, but we also wouldn’t consider the original series to be one that ended on such a high note that many people out there were eager to bring the show back.

Yet, the success of the Will & Grace revival coupled with some of the buzz surrounding the new Roseanne is starting to lead to conversations that maybe a Mad About You revival, mad as it may sound, could actually happen in the future. According to a report from TVLine, original series star and co-creator Paul Reiser is leading the charge to bring the show back, and both he and former co-star Helen Hunt are in discussions with studio Sony to have it happen. NBC was the original network behind the series, but for the time being there are no discussions there to bring the show back.

As for what the premise for a new version of the series would be, think along the lines of the following: Jamie and Paul’s daughter Mabel is now 17 years old, and after being admitted to college they have to figure out what the rest of their lives are going to look like. It’s a relatable, simple premise that should work fairly well within a series format. The funny thing is that this is typically the premise for something that happens around the eighth or ninth season of a beloved sitcom once they realize that there is very little way in which to keep the show going in its original form as the child actors are growing up.

NBC feels like the obvious destination for a revival (which would apparently be around 10 episodes), but the one thing that may hold it back there is that NBC isn’t really in the family-comedy game all that much anymore. It would probably make for a good companion piece to Will & Grace, but are younger audiences really going to flock to it? It feels almost better suited either on a network like CBS (which caters to older viewers) or a streaming service like a Netflix or a Hulu.

We’ll keep watch on what happens here. The most notable thing here is that this is the second case this week we’ve reported about a comedy series being possibly revived. The first instance of this came courtesy of The Office, and you can read even more about that by heading over here.
