The Blacklist season 5 photo: First look at Famke Janssen’s return

Why is Famke Janssen back as Scottie Hargrave on The Blacklist season 5? We’ve got a first look at the character back in action and all signs point towards her having an emotional moment with one Liz Keen.

The photo above, via TV Guide, comes from next week’s sensational winter premiere entitled “Ruin.” This installment marks an opportunity to see more of what happened in the aftermath of Liz getting out of her coma — and in turn, trying to figure out what she wants the remainder of her life to look like. It’s not an easy thing that she is trying to come to grips with — her husband Tom is dead, and she’s missed a huge chunk of what’s transpired in the world around her. She has to find her bearings.

So what’s happened with Scottie in that time, let alone since the time since the end of The Blacklist: Redemption? We don’t want to give anything away there but we hope that there’s some element of closure present in this episode for those out there who did enjoy that series in the short period of time it was on. The relationship between Scottie and Tom was complicated, but by the end of the season we like to think that some sort of understanding was reached.

In speaking to the aforementioned website about this Liz – Scottie scene, executive producer Jon Bokenkamp passed along the following hint:

“We’re so excited to have Scottie Hargrave back! Not only do we love Famke, but remember — this is Tom’s mother — so she and Liz are both mourning the death of Tom Keen. I promise, the encounter between these two women is going to impact The Blacklist in a big and unexpected way.”

Even though Janssen hasn’t exactly been a notable figure throughout The Blacklist season 5, it’s also our hope that this moment will open the door for more appearances from her in the future. She’s a big part of the overall Blacklist mythology now both in terms of someone Reddington views as formidable and also Tom’s biological mother — and in turn, Agnes’ grandmother. She’s one of the only family members Liz really has left at this point.

The Blacklist on NBC Wednesday, January 3, and this isn’t the only preview that we’ve got for it!
