The Absentia – Amazon premiere date speculation continues…
If you recall, yesterday we reported here at CarterMatt that it is looking as though the Stana Katic series from Sony TV is going to be premiering in the month of February. That’s tremendous news! Yet, is there a way to narrow it down further? As it turns out, we do very well think so!
Typically, Amazon tends to release most of their original series on Fridays — while we recognize that Absentia is an acquisition and not an original series per se, we like to think that it would be treated almost equally as one. It’s got the sort of star power and premise that should play well in America and they should want to cast as wide a net for it as humanly possible. The best way for Amazon to do that with Absentia is to launch on a Friday and then give everyone a chance to binge-watch over the course of an entire weekend. It’s the same thing that Netflix does with many of their shows.
But which weekend coming up is the right weekend for it? That’s a little complicated. As many of you know, there are four different Fridays in the month of February — each one of them carries with it their own advantages and disadvantages.
February 2 – A great day to launch it in that the Winter Olympics aren’t on yet, but it’s also Super Bowl Weekend and many American viewers will likely be distracted by that.
February 9 – The Winter Olympics are officially underway! It’s the first week of the Games, and if there’s ever a time period in which viewers are going to have Olympic fever, this is probably going to be it.
February 16 – This to us is probably the ideal date. Even though the Olympics are still going on there’s not as much in the way of major, obvious competition otherwise. It should have some room to get some attention right around here.
February 23 – The bad news here is that by late February, some prospective viewers in the south my be a little less eager to stay indoors with temperatures starting to rise. On the flip side, with the Olympics coming to a close this is probably the quietest weekend in terms of television competition. (Remember that the Oscars are not on the air until we get around to March. Meanwhile, the Grammys are in late January.)
