Kevin Hart reacts to Saturday Night Live monologue criticism

Saturday Night Live monologue

For the second time this season a Saturday Night Live monologue is the subject of criticism. Earlier this season, Larry David was accused of being offensive for his bit about picking up women at Concentration Camps. Meanwhile, last night Kevin Hart performed a set where he proclaimed mothers as “not fun” and proclaimed that the majority of kids look forward to their dads being home in order to have a good time.

So how does Hart feel about some of the backlash? Basically, it doesn’t seem to be getting to him. In a post on Twitter at the bottom of this CarterMatt article, you can see that he isn’t exactly fazed by much of what is said. He’s doing the comedy that is right for him and we certainly think that he’s going to keep doing it. He hasn’t changed his comedy style in years, so there is virtually no reason to think that he is going to start changing it up now.

While we personally didn’t find Hart’s monologue altogether funny or creative, it was hard to be shocked or surprised like it — this is the sort of comedy he’s been performing for years. It’s also the same that many other mainstream comics have been doing for decades. Whether or not “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” comedy works in 2017 is debatable since there are so many other funny things that can be said that aren’t base generalizations. There are two things that audiences tend to be interested in at this point:

1. A new angle – So much of entertainment is over-saturated and there is desperation from many to experience something that they haven’t had a chance to experience before.

2. Something to vent about – If people thought Hart could do better than relying on stereotypes, of course they are going to be upset about it online. The moment that he began this monologue it was pretty easy to predict what the reaction is going to be.

So far this season there have been two monologues by comedians that have not come under fire — Kumail Nanjiani’s and Tiffany Haddish’s. If you are interested in watching some great comedy we suggest checking out either one of those.
