Is Blue Bloods season 8 dragging their feet on Jamie and Eddie?
Unfortunately, since that time much of the talk surrounding the two of them romantically has faded into oblivion. They’re not exactly dating anyone else, but they’re also not discussing much of what happened last season, either. It’s starting to feel as though the relationship is stuck in the same gear and not going anywhere, and that’s a shame given A) the characters’ chemistry with each other and B) how long some ‘shippers out there have waited to date.
So why isn’t Blue Bloods rushing things along when it comes to this couple? There are a few different theories that we can conjure up in regards to that.
1. They’re partners – We understand that Blue Bloods is trying to tell a story rooted in some authenticity, and with that you’ve got two characters who know that if they are together romantically it’s hard for them to be together on the job. Jamie is also such a by-the-book guy that he doesn’t seem okay entertaining the idea of dating Eddie in secret.
We’d love for these characters to throw caution to the wind and just try something, but it feels as though the writers are somewhat hesitant to have that happen.
2. Blue Bloods isn’t really a romantic show – While there are a number of viewers online who want to see Jamie and Eddie together, the producers seem to be cognizant that romance isn’t really what viewers watch this show for. Think about all of the Reagans right now — the only one romantically attached before this season was Danny and now Linda is dead. There aren’t any relationships going strong and there doesn’t appear to be any plan to shake that up.
3. Syndication – This show makes a lot of money by having repeats air on other networks. For the sake of continuity for those out there who are watching episodes here and there, it probably makes sense not to pair up Jamie and Eddie. The story, therefore, is roughly the same on Blue Bloods no matter when you’re watching.
Is it time for the Jamie / Eddie story to advance? Absolutely. It was time two seasons ago. While Blue Bloods doesn’t feel a sense of urgency they really should start to think about payoff. This is a show likely getting into the later seasons of its run and we don’t want to see a fan-service romance paid off at the last second.

I think the writers believe Jamie and Eddie will have more screen-time as police partners than if they were a couple since it’s a procedural show that mostly focuses on the crime of the week. Linda was very underused as Danny’s wife and I think that frustrated the actress so she left the show. I think the writers want to avoid a situation like that from repeating itself with Vanessa, which could happen if Eddie becomes Jamie’s significant other and is designated to mostly Reagan family dinner scenes. That’s why I think we won’t get the payoff to Jamko’s storyline until the series finale and why the writers keep dragging their feet since they have no idea when that final season will happen yet. I would love it if the writers surprised me and got Jamko together earlier so we could see some of their shared life together as a couple, especially since none of the other Reagans have significant others anymore. I just don’t know if the writers will be able to figure out a good balance between Jamko as a couple, their separate professional lives (since they would no longer be partners), and the other Reagans’ storylines both personal and professional (that mostly deal with the crime of the week), without reducing Eddie’s screen-time to even less than what it is right now. Because, let’s face it, Jamie and Eddie are already frequently sidelined in many episodes every season, even though they are considered the highlight of the show for many viewers and fans, including myself (who only started watching the show because I’m a huge fan of Donnie Wahlberg).
