Just in case you were worried going into tonight’s finale that this was the end of the road, don’t be – there will be a Z Nation season 5 airing on Syfy.
The good news was confirmed earlier today by the show’s executive producer David Michael Latt, who posted the graphic below with the tagline “The Reset Begins.” That tag line is going to generate a lot of discussion with fans especially after the season 4 finale airs tonight. Filming for the fifth season will begin next year — which of course makes sense given that this is also when we should see season 5 on the air.
With its season 5 renewal Z Nation further cements its position as one of Syfy’s premier franchises; it already was one of their longest-running series and this is another strong show of support from the network. Z Nation joins Killjoys (which has a two-season renewal now under its belt) in making it all the way to a season 5.
So far, season 4 of Z Nation is averaging a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and close to 600,000 viewers in live+same-day ratings. This puts the show right on par with Killjoys and slightly ahead of another popular Syfy series in Wynonna Earp. We give Z Nation a ton of credit for keeping pace; it hardly gets the same publicity and buzz of some of the other shows on Syfy (even though it really should), yet it has a devoted fanbase that has stuck with it throughout the years. Friday nights are hardly an easy battleground for any show, especially one that is airing in the fall against a wide array of other programming plus movies and dozens of other distractions. While there are a ton of zombie related shows out there right now (The Walking Dead, iZombie, The Santa Clarita Diet) Z Nation is a step above them all. It’s funny, it’s smart and it isn’t afraid to make big moves and kill off main characters. This is one of the few shows that actually makes us nervous for it’s characters and we love them for it.
What do we want to see on Z Nation season 5?
With a show like this it’s almost more fun to not speculate and instead just go along for the ride and enjoy every second of it. What makes the series unique is that it’s violent, but it mixes some of that gore with crazy humor (anyone remember the zombie cheese wheel?) and memorable characters. Z Nation embraces the weirdness of a zombie apocalypse, and that enables the cast and crew to have a lot of fun with it.
