Saturday Night Live preview: Kevin Hart – Foo Fighters expectations

Dave Chappelle

This weekend Saturday Night Live is bringing you the final show of the calendar year and what a show it should be! You’ve got Kevin Hart as the host and Foo Fighters as the musical guest — basically, you’ve got one of the most-popular comedians paired with one of the best bands of all time.

With Hart, SNL is banking on a familiar face in order to score big with the holiday episode — while we personally love alumni in this end-of-year spot (CarterMatt would’ve liked to have seen either Tina Fey or Bill Hader here) we do understand why Lorne Michaels and the producers went with Hart. He’ll bring in ratings and a lot of energy to end the year on a high note; also, he is promoting the new Jumanji movie, just in case you were wondering why he’s coming back and doing this right now.

The first suggestion that we have for Hart, (and the entire episode of SNL itself) is to keep the promotional plugs to a minimum. Mention the movie once during the monologue and then after that figure out a way to venture into some other territory. Don’t spend too much time dwelling on it like James Franco did with The Disaster Artist last week. That may be a great movie, but there’s nothing that repels millennials quite like the feeling that something is being shoved down their collective throats. (If you missed it, read our full review for the Franco episode over here).

Beyond that, our expectation is that Hart is going to come out and do a funny, silly show with a lot of energy and big characters. It’s precisely what SNL probably feels like they want to help close out 2017. Sure, they could’ve gone with someone a little more sentimental, but it’s been a downer year for a lot of people out there and if anyone can make people smile, it’s Kevin Hart. This marks a chance to inject the end of the year with a little bit more festivity and holiday cheer. Hart’s going to be game for anything and we feel like Foo Fighters are a big enough band that they’ll be willing to sacrifice a performance spot to do some holiday music rather than just their own singles. Also, if anyone on the SNL cast wants to give all of the Foo Fighters a hair cut, we’d be down to see that.
