The Simpsons releases new Robert Mueller parody (video)

Robert Mueller

The Simpsons is not one to shy away from politics, especially when it comes to the Trump Administration.

In the new video courtesy of Fox (see below), you can see Simpsons‘ crew take on not only Donald Trump (who they’ve certainly spoofed many times over), but also Robert Mueller in the wake of his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Story-wise, it doesn’t take all that much to describe what is going on here — Trump tries to throw $750 million on Mueller to get him to stop the investigation, and then when he doesn’t accept it, then tries to pardon himself. That doesn’t work, either. There’s a jab in here at Trump properties, just as there is also a not-so-casual mention of Trump’s previous ownership of the Miss Universe Pageant.

To us, the funniest part of the entire short was the part that also raises awareness for a certain cause: Puerto Rico. The cameo at the end by San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz is one we didn’t see coming, and The Simpsons use that here in order to remind everyone that Puerto Rico continues to need our help to recover from the devastation that took place there earlier this year.

What’s the biggest problem with the video?

Really, they’re two-fold. The first is trying to find an angle on Trump that hasn’t been done already on other shows. If we hadn’t seen a similar version to this Trump on Saturday Night Live, The President Show, and even in-the-moment impressions by Stephen Colbert and Trevor Noah, it’d probably be a little bit funnier. We’re down for a great Trump joke, but it has to be something unique that we haven’t heard before.

Also, out of all of the impressions out there on the Simpsons Trump is probably the worst. The writing is on par with much of what we would imagine Trump to say, but the voice doesn’t quite match.

Overall…

We still do like it when The Simpsons gets topical and political, even if not all of the jokes land. It gives the show more relevancy at a time when so many episodes are viewed as the same thing time and time again.
