Top Chef: Colorado episode 2 contenders: Who are the early favorites?

Tyler Anderson

Welcome to Top Chef: Colorado contenders, a series that will be on going here at CarterMatt for most of the season with one specific purpose in mind: Shining a spotlight on some of the movers and shakers. These are the chefs who you should watch out for entering a given episode — maybe they’re the favorites, or maybe they have momentum on their side.

With it being so early in the season, we’re going in part here on personality, but that is important on a reality show! We don’t think it’s necessarily a gauge in whether someone stays or goes, but Bravo / the producers definitely should want a winner that is a good ambassador for the show. They want someone who is memorable and outgoing. Mix that with a great chef — and there are plenty of those on this season — and you have a worthy combination.

Take a look at our top three picks below.

1. Tyler Anderson – Is his confidence running dangerous close to cockiness? Sure, but we sometimes like the cocky chefs who can back up some of their big talk with amazing dishes. Tyler’s got a high-risk strategy for winning this show, pushing himself every challenge and not just relying on his old recipes. It won him the first challenge and he also won our hearts in dissing tartare dishes and other things that are often done by Top Chef contestants who may be trying to play it safe sometimes.

2. Fatima Ali – She’s certainly more quiet than Tyler, but we really liked her approach in the first Elimination Challenge of sticking to her roots to come up with an interesting take on meat and potatoes. She’s the sort of contestant you really come to love on Top Chef since she represents two different worlds — she has a rich background of culinary training in great kitchens, but she’s also still got a love for personal, earthy cuisine that represents who she is as a person. She can combine those two elements much like any chef does great ingredients.

3. Christopher Scott – We were torn for this third spot between Christopher and Joe Sasto — we almost resisted putting Christopher just because we don’t want Top Chef: Colorado contenders to always be chefs who were in the top three the prior week. Yet, we realized that we’d probably have Christopher on here even if he wasn’t praised so much in the Elimination Challenge. He’s just such an interesting guy with an interesting food blend of Amish and soul food. We’ve never had that on the show before. He’s charting upwards because of his background as a unique reality TV contestant; his food also looks delicious, but we think some of his best could still be yet to come.
