Chicago Med season 3 episode 4 review: ‘Naughty or Nice’
This same dead Santa led to Chicago Med having an interesting conversation on the role hospitals play in ensuring that patients are treated and charged fairly. This Santa died before he could even be treated; yet, his family was left with a bill of over $10,000 to deal with. Goodwin was able to talk the board down from that amount because of a potential PR nightmare associated with charging Santa; yet, this could come back to bite her. It’s been an ongoing story already this season that the higher-ups are looking into Sharon’s performance; if she is focusing too much on the patients and not on the bottom line, there’s a chance that she could be in trouble down the line.
We still like the giving Goodwin more than the greedy Goodwin, and she showed her giving side once more in making sure that Dr. Charles got the time off that he needed. Early in the episode he learned that Jack Kellogg, the man who shot him and was sentenced to jail because of Dr. Reese, died behind bars. This storyline caused Reese to suffer from guilt while Charles realized that he, in turn, was right all along. This caused him to feel desperate to help another man even though this was a man that did not necessarily deserve treatment — he had committed murder and there wasn’t a whole lot he could do. After going through all of that plus his interactions with Sarah, Daniel is walking away for at least the holidays. He really should have done that a while ago.
“Naughty or Nice” had us worried about Dr. Charles most of the way, and we can also say that there were plenty of occasions in which we were also worried about Robyn. Given that Mekia Cox is a regular over on Once Upon a Time we’re just waiting until the moment comes when she leaves the hospital — tonight, it looked as though she was flashing back and suffering from some of her old symptoms. The fear of rats in her office caused her to spiral, but it turned out that it was just a faulty heater that was repaired soon after. She seems to now actually be okay.
Side note: Who is things that Dr. Bekker is now trying to swoop in on Robyn and take her man? We knew that she was aggressive in the hospital, but also with relationships? Geez.
The other big story tonight posed an interesting question for Dr. Will Halstead: How do you get around the Hippocratic oath? He knew about a possible Zika virus infestation that could spread but because of the man’s refusal to admit that he may have contracted it on a romantic affair, he was putting other lives at risk. Were it not for quick thinking on his part in getting the CDC involved, Natalie may have gotten the hospital in jeopardy by breaking the oath and getting the information out there.
CarterMatt Verdict
Chicago Med season 3 episode 4 was a worthy way to send the series off into the holidays. While there were (once again) no huge revelations, it was nice to see Dr. Charles finally admit that he needs a break to allow himself to heal. That’s imperative before he treats anyone else.
