Arrow considered Booster Gold, Blue Beetle as characters

Blue Beetle

Remember when there was talk about the Blue Beetle coming onto Arrow? We do. The comic character, otherwise known as Ted Kord, was rumored at some point following season 2 as a future addition to that show. That never happened, and there’s also been plenty of rumors over the years about another popular superhero in Booster Gold — whether it be on Arrow or Legends of Tomorrow.

So why haven’t we seen either one of these characters appear? Well, it is interesting to get confirmation that there were at one point discussions about them. Speaking (per ComicBook.com) while at ACE Comic Con, executive producer Marc Guggenheim had the following to say:

“I will say, both those characters [Booster Gold and Blue Beetle] are characters we’ve talked about … Originally Ray Palmer, who was introduced on Arrow, he was supposed to be Ted Kord and we went another way.

“So, you know, Booster and Blue Beetle, all the ‘B’ characters really, we’re always talking about but nothing I can announce or speak to at the moment.”

We’ve always felt like these two characters didn’t appear because there was some sort of plan for them in the DC film universe — at this point, though, we’re not so sure. Plus, the entire movie space is such a hot mess right now that we’re pretty sure that the TV show would do a much better job with them. We know that Ted Kord exists on Earth-1 given that his name has been referenced a number of times, so it’s not all that hard to fathom that he turns up at some point in the future. We’re starting to sense, though, the problem with adding too many heroes: You don’t want to kill them off, but you also don’t want to have so many good guys that your show is just completely overrun with them. Take a look at what’s happening with Thea on Arrow at the moment or with The Flash and Wally West — there’s only so much time in which we’re getting to see some of these people featured because there are so many other cooks in the kitchen.

Ultimately, we’ll see if anything changes with these characters in the seasons to come.
