Who left on the Legends of Tomorrow season 3 midseason finale?

Who almost came back on the Legends of Tomorrow season 3 midseason finale? Well, that would be Martin Stein! We saw him in the past, and we wanted to see him in the present again.

Unfortunately that didn’t happen and by the end of the episode, it was Jefferson Jackson a.k.a. Jax who seemed ready to leave the team for the time being. For much of the episode he took some time trying to change history. He didn’t want to lose Stein and with that, he gave the younger version of him something to read on the day of his death during the Earth-X disaster. Unfortunately, Stein didn’t end up reading it — something that the young version of the character explained by saying that he burned the letter, thinking that he lived a full life and didn’t need to cheat time. He didn’t want to do anything to jeopardize anything that he had.

Now, Jax is on a mission to find himself and he’s gone from the Legends in order to do so. From one vantage point, that’s a huge bummer given that we love Franz Drameh and the work that he does. We have a hard time thinking that this is the end for the character, but clearly Legends of Tomorrow isn’t interested in just making Jax go out there and be Firestorm without another half. That wouldn’t be true to the comic-book character. Hopefully, he’ll be back sooner rather than later, but there’s no current confirmation of that.

What we can say is that there’s, (at least in the immediate future) a new person getting aboard the Waverider: John Constantine. Matt Ryan turned up in the closing seconds of the episode as the iconic character, who last turned up on Arrow seasons ago. He has an arc ahead, and this is coming prior to him getting his own animated CW Seed series in the near future.

Oh, and one more thing: Sara Lance got a brief taste of Mallus during the episode — he’s from another dimension and is scary as heck, but the show is keeping their cards close to the vest.
