Law & Order: SVU season 19 and the value of humor on set

When you are dealing with the heaviest source material on the planet — such as what’s on Law & Order: SVU season 19 — humor can be important. This is one of the darkest shows on TV when it comes to subject matter and as a result of that, sometimes, you need to do what you can just for the sake of making it through the day. It’s almost like real life when you have a hard job — you have to find a way to get through the hardest of moments with a little bit of lightness here and there.

Thanks to Ice-T, we have more of a sense as to what life behind the scenes at Law & Order: SVU is really like. In speaking on the subject in a new interview with BuzzFeed, the actor behind the role of Fin had the following to say:

“I think the funniest part about working on SVU is that everybody on there is always playing around, and we really have a lot of fun telling jokes. A lot of times we’ll have guests, and they take the show dead serious and we are making jokes. They don’t understand how we’re laughing and doing it. When you see it on the show it’s going to be dead serious. We have to lighten up the environment with a lot of humor.”

We imagine that this is probably more important as the season goes along, especially since these seasons are long and the themes can take a toll. Luckily, the cast all knows that they have plenty of people cheering them on.

The SVU fall finale is airing on NBC Wednesday night, and following that there’s going to be more episodes coming in the new year, so get ready for the dreaded holiday hiatus. We’re already coming off of one of the heaviest episodes of the season in “Something Happened” and it was certainly emotional to say the least. It also featured a stellar performance from series star Mariska Hargitay. She was so incredible that she’s nominated for a CarterMatt Award for her performance this year!
