Chicago PD season 5 fall finale sneak peek: A study of pain
Unfortunately, Voight (Jason Beghe) is going to come bearing some bad news on Wednesday night to a grieving father: There is no real hope when it comes to his grief. It never gets better. He passes along this point of view to a man responsible for spending many years of his life taking down bad guys for drug related crimes. Yet, his own daughter fell apart in the midst of all of his work, taken down by addiction and by a system where humanity is corrupted and aggrandized. Doctors were responsible, individuals were responsible, and society didn’t do anything to curtail it.
Voight makes it clear to this man that he and Denny Woods are (surprisingly) working in tandem to ensure that justice for this young woman is served and that those responsible are held to justice — it’s a moving sentiment, especially when Voight does mention the loss of his son. Getting justice is the only consolation he can offer — though unfortunately, Voight does not offer any hint as to how he got justice for his son’s death. If this father knew that Voight went and murdered the party responsible, maybe he’d feel a little bit different about getting advice from him.
Voight may not realize it in the moment, but there is something deeper moving underneath the surface, a dragon that is waiting to arise and burn him to the ground. This dragon also carries with it Denny’s name, as his covert investigation into Intelligence’s actions is starting to yield results. In the process, unfortunately Ruzek could find himself exposed as the mole and a confrontation of the century could be coming. Voight is a man hanging by a thread in this department; if the dragon breathes once more on this thread, it’s going to snap and all the little fibers are going to fall apart. Voight may understand grief and may understand how to get justice, but he doesn’t understand how to find peace. In the police department, understanding peace is almost as important as understanding warfare. It’s a struggle he hasn’t seemed interested in reconciling.
