Supergirl season 3 episode 9 review: The showdown
Also, by around the ten-minute mark we were convinced that by the end of the season Alex is going to be taking care of Ruby after her mother Samantha goes Full Reign. The series certainly gave you plenty of tender moments between Samantha and Ruby, mostly as a nice reminder that they are going to tear your heart out and stomp on it later on in the episode.
In terms of villainy this episode, let’s just say that there was a lot going on. For one, you had a street gang wrecking havoc in National City, and then you had Morgan Edge doing what he could to try and kill Lena Luthor. James was able to stand up and protect her, and that definitely seems like enough to make the two parties grow closer. They kissed around the 45-minute mark of the episode and we’ll see where things go from here.
As for Reign, let’s just say that evil forces collided when she went on a killing spree on the gang and then went after Edge in his office. They met on the CatCo rooftop for the first time and apparently, Supergirl underestimated just how powerful she really is. That fight scene in the midst of the Christmas party was crazy — but also entertaining. Unfortunately by the end of the battle sequence she found herself pretty bruised and beaten … not to mention pretty close to dead. She dropped an almost-unconscious Supergirl off the side of the building and she fell right into a block of pavement.
Obviously, we know that she’s not dead, but that still has to be a pretty terrifying sight for the people of National City who thought that the Girl of Steel couldn’t be harmed.
The state of Kara and Mon-El
Well, it’s awkward right now. Kara’s doing her best to try and keep it together but it’s difficult seeing him around Imra and the two being lovey-dovey. In the midst of all of alien storylines and characters on Supergirl this one is decidedly human. Mon-El feels happy and he has every right to be; yet, Kara feels devastated and he probably needs to know to be more sensitive.
Mon-El and Imra were there to care for Supergirl at the end of the episode, as was everyone else important when she was doing her best to recover at the hospital.
The cliffhanger
Was that Samantha, or Reign, in her home on Christmas morning when Ruby showed up?
CarterMatt Verdict
Supergirl season 3 episode 9 was a great midseason finale for the show — the Reign scenes probably were more terrifying than just about anything that we’ve seen the show do.
