Rak-Su winners’ single Dimelo performed on The X Factor final
While last year’s winners’ single (“When Christmas Comes Around” from Matt Terry) was a little more spur-of-the-moment — at least in terms of fact that nobody had heard of it before — “Dimelo” is more of a familiar tune to Rak-Su fans as it’s an original composition. It’s also one that they performed previously on the season, though here you also had the talents of Wyclef Jean and Naughty Boy included. This was a high-energy number, and given that this is an original, it may be able to make a little more of an imprint than a generic cover or a holiday hit that is only relevant for a short period of time.
In general, we don’t have enormous expectations for this single to sell altogether well, and it doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the song itself. It’s more do at this point with the fairly-dubious history of singles from reality competition winners really turning into anything. While we’ve seen a few big sellers and notable winners here and there, this is really more about a foundation than anything else. It shows that contestants have a consumer base and this is used to lead into the debut album in the coming year. If an album sells well here, it shows that there is potential for there to be so much more down the line.
We do appreciate the fact that The X Factor is gearing more towards original material to close off a season given that some of their other past decisions have been futile. For example, who in their right minds thought it was a good idea to have Louisa Johnson do “Forever Young” as a coronation song? That just wasn’t who she was. This is far more indicative of these guys and their entire journey over the season. It’s a much better choice and we’ll see what happens from here with it.
