We feel like The Walking Dead season 8 episode 7 is going to be critical for the Eugene character, but not in expected ways.
In the sneak peek below, you get what may be very well a foundation to what’s coming up with Eugene. In this preview, Negan and Eugene have themselves a little bit of a heart to heart that seems to be all about protecting the Saviors at all costs. Negan reminds him how important it is that the Saviors all stay safe and Eugene seems to agree to that. Is he just telling Negan everything that he wants to hear? Absolutely, but this is one of the things that Eugene has always excelled at. He’s the ultimate chameleon in this world and can be effectively anything that anyone wants for him to be.
Right now Eugene is in a really tight spot since Negan and his lieutenants believe that there is a mole in the house… and they’re right. The issue is that it’s Dwight and not Eugene, but because Eugene is the newest member of the Saviors (and was once part of Rick’s group), everyone wants to immediately suspect him. Negan has given him a chance to find out who the mole really is, which would in turn clear himself of any wrongdoings.
Now, here’s what we’re starting to wonder. Is this episode finally going to be the one where Eugene has his big moment and realizes that being with the Saviors is a mistake? This storyline has admittedly gone on longer than we ever imagined that it would; our assumption going in was that maybe this would be a story of him being separate from Rick’s group for three or four episodes at most. Eugene likes safety and is a total coward, so maybe something in this episode will help him to see and understand more that safety is not possible for him here.
Another possibility here is the one that will make many viewers nervous for him — Eugene having a meeting with Lucille. Negan’s no dummy, and he’s smart enough to realize that Eugene is likely just using Negan and the Saviors for everything that he can. We’re almost at the mid-season finale and that often tends to mean one thing: Chaos raining down and people dying. For the time being, Eugene’s pretty high on the list of possible death candidates alongside Father Gabriel, who may choose to go out in an epic blaze of glory.
