Agents of SHIELD season 5 ratings not bad for first 2 episodes
The first two episodes of the season ended up drawing overall a 0.7 and then a 0.6 in the 18-49 demographic, numbers that are somewhat superior than what we’ve seen from Once Upon a Time or Marvel’s Inhumans for much of the fall. While they are down substantially from the start of season 4 we don’t actually believe that the numbers are all that far off from what Agents of SHIELD generated from last November on. It routinely hovered somewhere in the 0.6 – 0.8 range.
The struggle here is going to come in maintaining that rating, especially once the holidays are over and there are going to be so many other programming options out there. The one thing that Agents of SHIELD probably has going over some of the other ABC shows on Fridays is that the quality is on such a high level. Agents of SHIELD is coming off of its best season yet and they proved once more in the premiere that they aren’t afraid to show off some big twists. Having time-travel mixed with the potential end of the world is really not the sort of thing you are accustomed to seeing.
Will an Agents of SHIELD season 6 happen if these numbers stay level the rest of the season? We actually do think it’s possible, but if it falls down into the 0.5 range we’re going to be a little bit more inclined to think that we’re at the end of the road for the show. Next week will be a big test given that it’s closer to Christmas (a time when more families are engaging in festivities and watching less television) and to go along with that, you’re also going to see Agents of SHIELD air after Once Upon a Time and without much of the premiere hype.
As for some other ratings on the night…
It shouldn’t come as all that much of a surprise that Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods ended up winning the night among scripted programming with a 0.9 rating — this is really all it takes to dominate on Fridays at this point. MacGyver also did very well in generating a 0.8.
