For those hoping that a Haters Back Off season 3 would eventually find its way to Netflix, it’s unfortunately not happening.
The cancellation news was first reported by Deadline, and it stated that the series — which starred Colleen Ballinger as her famed YouTube character Miranda Sings in a brand-new venue — would be ending its Netflix run at just 16 episodes. The show had an ambitious premise and a great cast, including The Office alum Angela Kinsey, but that was not enough in order to get the show a longer run on the air.
One of the interesting questions that the aforementioned report does note is this: Is it possible that YouTube picks up Haters Back Off and turns it into their own original series? That’s an intriguing possibility given that it would be putting Ballinger back into the same venue that helped to make her a star in the first place. While she’d be creating more long-form content for YouTube than she did in the past she knows this audience and could market to them very well. It’s an interesting model and certainly one that was not altogether available to her (or anyone else) years ago before YouTube launched their own original-content service and started partnering with some of their best content creators.
While Netflix (for the most part) has been fairly kind to its original programming, given many of them multiple seasons and a long time to find their audience, they are now in a position where they are a little more quick to cancel shows than they were previously. They’ve got that sort of clout courtesy of having almost an entirely new program coming on the air every single week. It gives them the freedom to remove programs that they don’t think are performing well enough and plug in those spots with others on the release calendar. While Netflix remains a premier destination for content, you can argue that we’re getting to a tipping point where there is so much that it’s hard for many mid-tier shows like a Haters Back Off or an Atypical or a Longmire to get the same attention as a big-budget show like The Crown or Orange is the New Black.
