Vikings season 5 episode 3 preview: Will the brothers choose sides?
Before diving into the episode, a note on its designation as episode 3 — History technically considered the premiere tonight two separate episodes in the 20-episode order. Therefore, next week is episode 3 even if there was no clear break at all tonight in the action that made this feel like back to back episodes.
In moving beyond that, CarterMatt has for you the Vikings season 5 episode 3 synopsis:
“Celebrations are cut short in the aftermath of the battle at York; Ragnar Lothbrok’s sons are pitted against each other as tensions reach an all-time high, and each is forced to choose a side…”
The statement “celebrations are cut short” has to be one that’s been uttered at least a dozen or so times in the history of Vikings, mostly because nothing ever seems altogether peaceful. The fascinating part of this story comes with the brothers being forced to choose allegiances. You knew that this was bound to happen eventually. Tonight, we saw the brothers choosing to work together in order to seize the town of York after Bjorn left them – he was effectively the glue that held everything together, but they seemed to work together well enough without him.
Here’s what could cause the brothers to fall apart: Some potential cracks in their plan. The defenses of York are not strong enough, and as a result of that we could see Heahmund and Aethelwulf figure out a way in which to break it down. Part of the drama with this episode will be seeing if these characters figure this out, and in turn, whether or not there is anything that the brothers can do to stop them. Their castle could come crumbling down as a part of poor planning.
Hopefully Vikings season 5 episode 3 keeps up the momentum that was established in the premiere — and in the process keep the fear of death front and center. Sure this is a show based on history, but it’s flexible enough that there’s reason to worry about certain characters.
