Matt Smith not returning to Doctor Who soon; as for down the road…

Matt Smith

Is it possible that we’re going to get a Matt Smith – Doctor Who return in the future? If the actor has his way, sure. It seems as though this is something that he’s open to doing, though he may be interested in waiting for a little while before making it happen.

While speaking to MTV in the video below (while promoting The Crown), Smith made it abundantly clear that after giving new Doctor Jodie Whittaker a chance to come into her own in her role, he would be game to dive back into The Doctor role and explore embarking on some new adventures once more:

“Why not? I’d come back … Yeah, if the timing was right.

“I think we’ve gotta give a few years to Miss Whittaker to get the Tardis under her belt, as it were, and then yeah – one day.”

These comments from Smith do by and large echo much of what he’s said ever since departing the show — he’s always remained interested in coming back and doing more, but one of the greatest challenges that goes along with this is simply finding the time and also the reason to make it happen story-wise. This is a show that could theoretically bring back past Doctors at any point, but it’s not a device they want to use too often. When a Doctor regenerates, the whole point there is that you do move on and explore some new territory. You don’t just want to regurgitate some of the same stuff you’ve seen many times before.

Our feeling is that maybe they have the return of Matt Smith or Whittaker’s former Broadchurch co-star David Tennant into a story that exists in season 12 or 13. The first season, at the very least, should be one that enables Jodie to have her own time in the spotlight where she’s not overshadowed by anyone else. The eleventh season should premiere at some point in 2018; hopefully, there will be some more updates to share soon enough.
