Jake Johnson helped make New Girl series finale possible

Code Black and New Girl

Were it not for the help of Jake Johnson, some other cast members, and fans, the New Girl series finale would have aired last spring. The show was granted a season 7 renewal, and while it may only be for eight episodes, that gives the writers time to craft ideal endings for all of the characters. This is coming with a massive time jump, but as we’ve seen with Parks and Recreation (and other shows) doing time jumps for a short period of time can really work.

In speaking on the subject of his personal plea to TVLine, Johnson had the following message to pass along:

“I was one of [cast members] that wrote [Fox heads Dana Walden and Gary Newman] and asked for more … I said, ‘I don’t think you gave us enough time to finish the show the right way. And I would really appreciate — and I think the fans would appreciate — a final goodbye to these characters.’

“… I’ve done a lot of projects — and some of the projects have fans and some don’t … And to be on a television show that actually has a group of people who care [is special].”

While New Girl has not necessarily had the best ratings for the entirety of its run on Fox, one of the things that it has had going for it is a devoted audience, critical acclaim, and also a big streaming fan base. It’s one of those shows that really has benefited a lot from binge-watching over time and its preliminary numbers only spell out a small piece of the puzzle. We hope that the New Girl series finale, whenever it airs, does give viewers a chance to get some closure for Nick and Jess’ relationship, plus also learning where Schmidt and Cece are in their lives and if Winston has ever found some normalcy … provided that this is something that a guy like Winston can really ever find.

The New Girl final season premieres on Fox this spring, and hopefully there will be more news by then. For now, let’s just all send Johnson a big thank-you for helping to ensure that we are getting it at all.
