American Idol 16: Britney Holmes advances to Hollywood after AMA ‘audition’

American Idol 16

The first “official” American Idol 16 audition happened over the past two days — and no, we’re not counting the one featuring a member of the Detroit Lions.

On Sunday night, ABC opted to air three different auditions featuring upcoming contestants during the American Music Awards, with the winner of the group getting an opportunity to go through to Hollywood on the strength of that support base. It’s a cool chance for one of them to get an immediate fan base, and while this is no guarantee of success down the road, it does mean that they’ve got a shot at making it further than they may have otherwise.

The results of the 24-hour voting window were announced during Dancing with the Stars on Monday, and it was revealed that 28-year old Britney Holmes is going to be the one making it to Hollywood! You can see her audition to “Let It Go” below, as introduced by judge Katy Perry. Her performance is a really fantastic one, so it’s not all too big of a shock to see her get the opportunity to move on. We also appreciate this even more because she’s a contestant who is a little more seasoned in life; sometimes the teenagers we see on this show just don’t have the life experience to emotionally convey some of the stuff they are singing about.

One other thing that we like about Britney is that she’s from Aubrey, Texas, which is a small town about 15 or so miles from where we grew up. It’s not the sort of place you get to see in the headlines all that often so we’re rather glad to see someone get this sort of opportunity.

The one thing that clearly helps Britney here is that she’s going to be instantly more memorable than some other contestants entering the season — whether or not that changes if she’s not featured on the show much in the early going remains to be seen. We don’t know how many AMA viewers are also going to be American Idol viewers down the road.
