Diana Gabaldon open to writing Outlander season 5 episode; not writing in season 4

Diana Gabaldon

When will Diana Gabaldon write another Outlander episode? This is a question that’s been thrown around here and there and we now have an answer.

Gabaldon, whose books are the entire reason that the Starz series exists, previously wrote the fantastic season 2 episode “Vengeance Is Mine.” Because of both that and being the person at the center of the entire series, it really should not come as much of a surprise that there is a demand for her to do more. She knows Jamie and Claire better than anyone!

As for whether or not that is actually going to happen? Judging from what Gabaldon wrote on Sony’s Twitter during a Q&A session this morning, she is open to doing an episode in season 5 — in theory. That doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen. She didn’t write one this season and isn’t contributing one for season 4, largely because she is working on the ninth book in the series entitled Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. That book is one Gabaldon is hoping to finish next year, though writing takes time and this is one of those situations in which the story will be done when it’s done — it’s really as simple as that.

We’ve said this time and time again, but it’s almost a given at this point that there will be a fifth season of Outlander. While you never want to count your chickens before they hatch, it absolutely seems at the moment like a new batch of episodes will in fact be ordered by early next year. This will give the team a chance to start looking ahead to what’s coming up in season 5 and figuring out who some of their writers are going to be. More than likely the season 5 writers room will open either in the late spring or early summer of next year, provided that the show is able to keep the same schedule that they did moving into season 4 production.

Our opinion on this matter is pretty easy to spell out: We’d love for Diana to write another episode; yet, she probably has the best excuse possible not to write one out there! She’s busy crafting new stories and we have a hard time thinking that anyone would be upset if she were putting the emphasis on finishing her final two novels in the series.

Focusing on the now for a moment…

There are still three more episodes to go in Outlander season 3 and if you want to get some more news on that subject, we’re here with a wide array of additional news!
