SNL music: Eminem and Skylar Grey perform ‘Walk on Water,’ ‘Stan’

Dave Chappelle

Tonight, Eminem performed “Walk on Water” on Saturday Night Live, and he decided to bring along with him someone responsible for making the song in the first place: Skylar Grey. She is a frequent collaborator of Eminem’s, but the more famous version of the song features Beyonce.

We’re sure that most of the immediate reactions to the song tonight are going to be “where’s Beyonce,” but Grey did a rather nice job. We do think that the song is a little bit disjointed in general, though — the piano part is wonderful, but it feels almost like a different song than the one that Eminem was rapping.

Still, Eminem is one of the best rappers of the past two decades and he performs in a way that is completely mesmerizing — including the way he moves around the stage and covers his eyes in a way that makes him look a little bit more powerful and mysterious.

Lyrically, we do think it’s interesting that Eminem is rapping about on the pitfalls of his career while performing on one of the biggest stages on TV.

This is where things get interesting…

After this song, Eminem and Grey actually went through some of the biggest hits over the course of the rapper’s career, including “Stan” and “Love the Way You Lie.” This was an extended performance featuring the two, but every moment of it was thrilling. Eminem does always attract a certain degree of controversy because of his lyrics, but when it comes to talent itself that cannot be ignored.

Overall, this probably is one of the best performances of the season, and we do wish that SNL would allow more musical guests to do multiple songs as one time. After all, the momentum that Eminem had from one song to the next was really great and it just allowed him to build from one performance to the next.

When the show returns in December, we are going to get yet another big name as a musical guest: U2 … otherwise known as one of the biggest bands in the world.
