Tonight, Carmen Ejogo was announced as one of the new leads for True Detective season 3 — while she is a great performer, we understand that to some out there she may not be an extremely familiar face.

With that in mind, let’s give a little bit of background as to what makes her so interesting. She grew up in the United Kingdom to Nigerian and Scottish parents, and over the past two decades has amassed credits in a wide array of things — including some movies that you are more than familiar with including Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Alex Cross, Purge: Anarchy, and Selma. She’s also appeared in a number of shows including Zero Hour and The Girlfriend Experience. Once you see her in the show, you’re going to more than likely recognize her from some of her other work.

She’s had such a great and varied career that we’re rather thrilled to see her in what may end up being her breakout role.

According to Deadline, Ejogo is playing Amelia Reardon, described as “an Arkansas schoolteacher with a connection to two missing children in 1980.” She is going to be paired up on this show with Mahershala Ali of Moonlight fame, who is playing the part of detective Wayne Hays. There are similarities between this season of the show and the critically-acclaimed first one starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, including that the story is going to span several decades. The primary difference here is that we’ve got a story set this time in the Ozarks as opposed to Louisiana. Part of the fun here could come in how the shows choose to play around with geography. Even though the two places are technically close to each other in some ways, they are rather distant from one another in culture and style.

At the moment we’re still far too early out to know the True Detective season 3 premiere date, but a smart guess would be the winter or spring of 2019. It could be the show that comes on after Game of Thrones concludes its run.
