The Blacklist season 5 fall finale will answer ‘does Tom survive?’ question
Luckily, it doesn’t seem as though the NBC series is going to force some big cliffhanger on you in terms of whether or not Ryan Eggold’s character lives — you will learn the answer to this question during the fall finale next week. There may be another cliffhanger (with this show, anything is possible), but when it comes to Tom you can feel good knowing that you will at least get answers about his fate.
This is something that executive producer Jon Bokenkamp discusses a little more at length in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly:
“We are on a collision course with that moment … Tom gets as close as anyone has gotten to unlocking the deeper mythology of the show, [but] Red is willing to go to the end of the earth and back to put these bones back in the ground.”
There is a point of no return when it comes to The Blacklist and this is what we’re starting to inch towards with this Tom – Reddington story. If Tom does learn the truth about the bones in the suitcase — and if he tells Liz — the entire series changes. Whatever devastating secret Reddington is harboring is one that finally comes out in the open. That’s an exciting prospect, but we’re also not sure that the series has made it to the point yet where they are 100% ready to put all of their cards on the table. We wouldn’t be altogether shocked if the writers want to remain secretive on some matters for a little while longer.
One other interesting idea for what the fall finale could bring is us is learning more about Reddington’s secret while Liz and the rest of the Task Force remain in the dark. Tom could learn the truth, but he could also take it to his grave. There is a real danger that this is where we’re going to lose him from the show — but even if we do, in turn there becomes another question as to how Liz ever trusts Reddington again? Even if he’s able to cover up what happens to Tom sooner or later you’d have to think she would find out the truth and never speak with him again. Liz is a smart woman and although she has been blindsided a few times along the way, she’s going forward with her eyes wide open.
