Outlander season 3 episode 9 preview: Jamie and Claire’s journey begins
This weekend’s new episode entitled “First Wife” included with the capture of Young Ian at sea, and now, Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe’s characters have to do whatever they can in order to save him … even though doing so is not going to prove to be an altogether easy task for a wide array of different reasons. One of the biggest ones is merely the fact that they may having to travel much farther than they ever felt they would have to. Think in terms of a completely different part of the world.
This episode kicks off the portion of Outlander season 3 that filmed in South Africa this past spring. They have sets there that were used for another series in Black Sails, and the crew there understands (perhaps better than anyone) what it is like filming some of these scenes at sea. The Outlander season 3 episode 9 promo below gives you a sense aesthetically as to what this episode will look like alongside what one of the central crises at sea is going to be: Seeing if Claire can stop an outbreak from spreading. She may be a doctor with advanced skills for this period of history, but she’s only human and can only do so much.

Claire and Jamie leave Scotland, sailing to the West Indies on an urgent quest. But when the superstitious crew looks for someone to blame after a string of bad luck, rescue comes from an unlikely source.
Obviously, this episode will test Jamie and Claire like no other. While the good news here is that they are going to have plenty of time in order to work through some of their issues, the bad news is that they may also have plenty of arguments since there is no escape from each other. The two of them are trapped on the same ship and they need to find a way to coexist there in the wake of everything that they’ve went through — and they’ve gone through a lot given that we’re coming off of the big Laoghaire reveal and Claire trying to repair some sort of relationship with Jenny. (That didn’t come together all that easy.)
