Saturday Night Live cold open: Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump visits Paul Manafort

Dave Chappelle

We will be honest: We weren’t quite sure that Alec Baldwin would open Saturday Night Live this weekend as Donald Trump. Why? It had to do with some headlines away from the show.

If you want to read some more news as to what happened, all you have to do is head over to the link here.

Now, let’s get into the cold open, which actually did feature Baldwin as Trump paying a visit to Paul Manaford to make him feel better about the fact that he was going to be in big trouble thanks to Robert Mueller. This was pretty ridiculous, and we have to say that it was also pretty edgy in between the Harvey Weinstein jokes and Melania (Cecile Strong) falling for a stuffed version of Donald — a stand-in that he hired for the Asia trip.

The biggest problem that the cold open actually had was the crowd — there were some very funny jokes in here and either the audience didn’t hear them or they were too distracted by the end of the sketch, when Baldwin got in the shower with Manaford and eventually a fully-clothed Mike Pence and Senator Jeff Sessions, that they missed them. The first Trump/Weinstein comparison barely got a snicker.

Somehow though, McKinnon stole the show as her nonsensical Sessions, complete with him sporting a plastic tail for some reason. Still, a good joke was wedged in here about how he was wearing a striped bathing suit because they’d all be wearing stripes someday.

Is the Trump impression still working?

On its own, we are CarterMatt weren’t feeling it like we once were. The President’s been in power for a while and Baldwin is not a special cameo anymore. This is really all about the writing and the creativity more so than Baldwin’s character. If the writers give him an entertaining scenario to thrive in he can deliver — if he’s just doing another press conference it doesn’t work anymore. While this didn’t quite work at first and some of the Melania transitions were jaunty, the sketch got funnier as it went along culminating with the shower scene.

Also, we really think that Trump is going to be upset over this one — especially with some of the Weinstein comparisons.
