Timeless season 2: Abigail Spencer teases Lucy’s evolution
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the series star talked about some of the new elements coming up on the show, including how she is going to be handling the news that her mother (Susanna Thompson) was actually a part of Rittenhouse and was not the same kind, caring mother that she previously thought she was:
“It’s going to be more of what you loved about season 1 and some really cool shifts,” she says. “We’re going to go deeper into the history, and Lucy is going to have to deal with the fact that her mom is a super baddie. Lucy is really going to grow. Season 1 Lucy, things were happening to her, ‘Oh my gosh, time machines! Time travel!’ and she was trying to keep it all together. She was a very reactive and strung along character, and I think she’s going to be a more proactive character now in making things happen in season 2.”
Obviously, there are going to be some wonderful time-travel stories and plenty of fun moments that go along with them. We just don’t want to forget that Timeless could also deliver some deep, earth-shattering personal moments for these characters. They’re still just humans trying to deal with some extraordinary circumstances. For Lucy, one of these is trying to reconcile the person that she was with the person that she is. It’s probably nice to be aware of the truth about who her mother really is, but that doesn’t make it any less devastating that she’s not who she previously thought she was.
Beyond the devastation, there are opportunities for a lot of celebration and a lot of hope. There’s something rewarding that likely comes from saving the world and trying to ensure that history is preserved. For Lucy as a historian there may also be a little bit of dream fulfillment; we do hope (for her sake) that there are some opportunities for her to see some eras that she’s long wanted to see and that she finds some joy amidst the chaos.
Of course, there are also some opportunities for romance here and there — we definitely know that there are quite a few Lucy/Wyatt ‘shippers out there who’d love to see something happen.
