New 24 revival being developed at Fox — but with a major twist

24 revival

Is Fox finding a way to keep the 24 legacy alive even without 24: Legacy on the air? It certainly seems to be that way based on the news coming out today.

According to a report from Deadline, there is a new version of 24 that is being developed and it’s going to be very different than the original starring Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer. With that in mind, don’t expect to see anyone being kicked out of windows or having everything exploding every five seconds. This new version of the show is going to revolve around a “female prosecutor who uncovers a legal conspiracy and has to work against the clock to save a death row inmate facing imminent execution whom she had helped prosecute but may be innocent.”

Sound like an interesting idea? It may be, but the real test of this show will become via casting, and trying to find a way to incorporate the show’s main gimmick of the ever-ticking clock.

One of the other interesting things about the new 24 is that it may be adopting somewhat of an anthology feel similar to American Horror Story or True Detective. Each season could have its own recurring characters and story. Effectively, each season would be a different case – this is something that CarterMatt can really get behind. We’ve never made it much of a secret that we love shows like this with one of our favorites being Fargo.

So what’s exciting about this? It’s probably not the idea of some lawyer hopped up on Red Bull energy drinks while pouring over case files. Fox has to find a way to get creative, and it’s understandable why they would want to look at 24 for solutions as to how to make that happen. This is a network that has done very well reviving franchises, but has struggled trying to find a way to develop more original properties that are just as successful. Other than Empire, what else is there? Lethal Weapon is doing okay, but even it is a remake of a movie series. Meanwhile, STAR has okay ratings, but much of it benefits heavily from airing right after Empire.

Do you think that this new version of 24 could work? Share some of your thoughts now in the comments below and tell us what actors you would want to see in the title role. (Personally, we’d love to see a cameo from Kiefer Sutherland, even if he was not featured during 24 Legacy because of his Designated Survivor commitments.)
