Doctor Who Christmas Special: David Bradley praises Jodie Whittaker

David Bradley

David Bradley is already very familiar to many Doctor Who fans for his performance in An Adventure in Space and Time, the TV movie meant to highlight the early years of the science fiction sensation. For other fans, he will become known for playing a version of William Hartnell’s first Doctor on the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas Special. For the final episode of executive producer Steven Moffat’s time with the show, the story is coming somewhat full-circle. We will have a Doctor (Peter Capaldi) near the end of his time, and in the process of him avoiding regeneration he will come into contact with another (Bradley’s version of the first Doctor). Details beyond that are unclear but knowing this show we anticipate it being emotional, and devastating, but maybe in the end hopeful. As Matt Smith said near the end of his time as The Doctor “times change … and so must I.”

Eventually, though, the regeneration will come regardless of whether or not Capaldi’s Twelve wants it; then, Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteen will be born. It’s been the most talked-about moment in Doctor Who arguably in years. With that, there are plenty of people speaking out with some of their own thoughts on the subject.

Take, for example, Bradley himself. He actually knows Whittaker better than most thanks to his time working on Broadchurch, which featured both her and new showrunner Chris Chibnall. While at MCM Comic-Con in London this weekend the actor passed along some of the following thoughts (per Radio Times) when discussing her coming on board:

“As soon as I heard she was doing it I was really very surprised … But happily surprised, because I know that she’s got this great depth as an actress, anyone who saw Broadchurch saw the range that she had.

“And not only that, just hanging out with her you realise what fun she is, and she’s always up for a laugh. So she’s got everything needed for playing the part. I think she’ll be absolutely brilliant. So I was very excited when I saw she was doing it.”

Basically, Bradley thinks that Whittaker will have everything needed in order to brilliantly execute this part, whether it be the humor, the heart, the passion, or the imagination.
