Could Lethal Weapon 5 impact Lethal Weapon TV series?

Lethal Weapon 5

We never thought that Lethal Weapon 5 was a possibility, regardless of whether or not a Lethal Weapon TV show came to fruition. Yet, here we are.

According to Deadline, series stars Danny Glover and Mel Gibson are looking into potentially making another Lethal Weapon movie with director Richard Donner on board. This would be a reunion a long time coming, and for both them and also for the studio Warner Bros. It makes a certain degree of sense that everyone would want to come back and make more: These movies were enormous hits over the years, and there is probably still a market out there based on the franchise’s name recognition alone.

With that being said though, there are still some other questions that do have to be considered here — especially in terms of whether or not this would be a good thing for the Lethal Weapon TV franchise. We’re admittedly very much biased, given that we love the show and would like to see it continue. We also think that the ratings could use a positive boost after some recent struggles and it’s hard to say if the movie would hurt it or not.

In the end, we’re actually feeling fairly confident that the TV show would only benefit from a Lethal Weapon 5 —  we have a hard time thinking that Fox or anyone else would want to shut the show down because there’s another movie. It’d probably benefit from cross-promotion; heck, you have to wonder if there is a way to get one of the stars of the movie to put in a cameo on the show around the time it comes out — provided it happens and the show is still on the air. We’re ultimately thinking pretty far into the future here, given that Lethal Weapon 5 is still in the very early stages and if it happens, it’d probably be either late next year or 2019 when it comes out — and that is with us being optimistic. It takes a lot of time to get everything set for a movie these days.
