Grey’s Anatomy season 14: Could Martin Henderson return?

Martin Henderson

Is it possible for a Martin Henderson return to Grey’s Anatomy at some point in the near future?

We know that for us at CarterMatt, it’s something that we would be open to seeing; Nathan Riggs was an interesting character, someone with a lot of heart and someone who had deep ties to many different characters. His exit does shake up the show in a major way. With Owen, he no longer has the same demons to conquer that he once did. Some of those are gone, and he now has a chance to do something that he was not going to have a to do previously: Move forward. He knows that Riggs isn’t a terrible man in the way he once thought and knows the fuller scope of the story. He also knows that his sister Megan is alive and happy. The two are okay, and there is a chance that someday they could all meet up again.

For the time being, though, the time for Riggs on the show is over. This leaves Meredith without a love interest, but to boil Riggs down to just a love interest doesn’t seem altogether fair when he is a man who brought much more to the table than that.

On the subject of whether or not he would consider coming back to the show someday, here is what Henderson had to say to Deadline:

“I would never close the door. In my mind it’s been left open-ended enough. This is the third time that Shonda [Rhimes] and I have worked together. I think providing an exit for the character where there’s a possibility for him to return is always nice. It was always a short-term thing and I was happy to spend a few years doing the show. For now, it’s about exploring some other areas and I think that suits me. I’m not used to do doing long-term things creatively, so for me it’s a nice amount of time. If the opportunity came in the future with an interesting storyline, I’d be happy to explore. I definitely feel connected to Shonda and am grateful for the opportunity she has given me.”

The part of this story that is probably news to many people out there is that Henderson was only planning to spend a couple of years on the show — he and ABC did a good job of keeping things under wraps.

Like we said when we first wrote about his exit at CarterMatt, we’ll miss him and what he brought to the character. Unfortunately, all things when it comes to Grey’s Anatomy often end in unexpected ways and the carousel just keeps going. At least Riggs got a chance to get out of the show alive, right?
