The Crown season 3: Broadchurch alum Olivia Colman to be Elizabeth
As first reported by Variety, we do know who will be playing the older version of the Queen now for the next two seasons: Olivia Colman! The actress, best known for her parts on Broadchurch and The Night Manager, has landed the coveted role. She replaces Claire Foy, who has been exceptional in the part, and the recasting is not meant as a slight to her in the slightest. Like everyone else, she has known for quite some time that this shift is coming.
For months, Colman was attached to another prominent British role in The Doctor alongside Tilda Swinton and many other actresses/actors. Former Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall is the new showrunner of Doctor Who, and he ended up going with someone else from his former show in Jodie Whittaker for the part.
The Crown season 3 will likely not premiere until 2018 at the earliest, so you have some time to get accustomed to the idea of change. After all, the second season has yet to even premiere, so you’ll get to see another full season with Foy in the role before we move forward.
How long could The Crown last?
While much of this could be up to however long Netflix wants to keep the show around, for the time being the plan is to tell a story in six seasons. At the conclusion of season 4, the Queen Elizabeth character, to go along with many others, would be recast again so that we could jump forward to another period of the Royal’s life. This is a highly ambitious and highly expensive series, so we hope that the ratings and buzz stay around it so that it can continue to produce great episodes.
We’re also very intrigued here at CarterMatt to see who will end up playing some of the other roles — just as replacing Foy is a Herculean task, the same goes for finding a way to replace the incredible Matt Smith. These are performers who could be nominated for years if they were able to hold on to the roles for that long. Alas, all good things must come to an end, right?
