Is it decision time for Midnight, Texas season 2 renewal?

Midnight, Texas season 2

So far, the past month or so has been a bloodletting for many summer scripted shows — The Night Shift and Zoo were both canceled. While we are getting more of Salvation over on CBS, we know that the future is also pretty much done for both Still Star-Crossed and Somewhere Between. It’s becoming progressively harder over time to make a living doing summer scripted shows, and all of this makes us nervous for the Midnight, Texas season 2 renewal campaign.

Is the show coming back? We’d still file this under “a toss-up,” mostly because NBC doesn’t necessarily have an obligation to bring the show back. Its ratings were solid for most of the summer, but we wouldn’t necessarily consider them to be spectacular. More so than that, NBC is a network with probably a higher summer standard than most given that the ratings have been pretty good for most of their summer lineup — they have hits like World of Dance, Marlon, America’s Got Talent, American Ninja Warrior, and some of their game shows. They also have Timeless potentially filling one of the timeslots this fall in the event that they are planning to bring it back at this point rather than the spring.

For the time being, we do remain optimistic just because many summer scripted shows receive more than one opportunity to shine, even ones like Extant that drew pretty poor ratings the first go-around. Midnight, Texas is the sort of show that could get some more viewers due to streaming over the next year — more people just have to know that the show exists. More so than almost anything else, getting exposure at this point is one of the biggest challenges for almost any show.

Last year, NBC waited until after Halloween in order to renew The Night Shift — this gives you somewhat of a timeline as to how long they could wait on making a decision here one way or another. Personally, we want to remain confident that we’ll see more of Midnight, Texas just because they’re taking so long with their decision — if they don’t renew it, we certainly do hope that someone else will.

One thing that we really should point out here is that the news coming out today that Midnight, Texas star François Arnaud has joined the cast of UnREAL season 4 — however, TVLine reports that this schedule for the show is such that he would be able to do both this and another season of the supernatural series in the event that it does get renewed. There’s nothing to worry about there.

Do you think that a Midnight, Texas season 2 renewal will happen?
