The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror highlights Homer’s cannibalism

Homer's cannibalism

The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror has dome some pretty horrific stuff over the years, but somehow, Homer’s cannibalism may to the list.

Basically, what you saw over the course of this storyline was Homer accidentally cutting off his own finger, and then after realizing that he was delicious, decided that he may potentially want a little more. It was messed-up, twisted, and absolutely gross. Basically, it was what you would want from a Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror episode, given that this is a show that does love to throw some of this gross stuff at you

In speaking on the subject of some of what transpired over the course of this episode — and also why the show decided to go in this super-gross direction in the first place — to Entertainment Weekly executive producer Al Jean had the following to say:

“We want to surprise people … We really heard a lot of people saying they wanted something that was scary — and this one’s scary. There definitely have been comments online where a number of people have said we want the horror back in ‘Treehouse of Horror.’ So that was a thought. And then for the idea for the segment, Joel Cohen [who pitched the idea], said, ‘Homer eats himself because he’s so delicious.’”

There were some concerns as to whether or not the story would be too disgusting so there were a few choices made along the way to ensure that it didn’t go too far past the reaches of network television and what is acceptable. As it is, this was a very risky episode for Sunday night at 8:00 p.m. Eastern, a time that is often perceived as being reserved for families.

One of the things that is most interesting to us is what The Simpsons couldn’t get that they really wanted for the episode: The rights to Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” which Lisa wanted to sing. Per Jean, this was turned down by the late performer’s representatives: “They did not want to be associated with people eating their father.” We cannot say that we’re altogether surprised by this given just how polarizing this episode probably is to people who are out there.
