There was some fairly significant news announced yesterday, if you missed it for whatever reason: Magnum PI may be coming back!
CBS is recruiting the team of Peter Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim from Hawaii Five-0 to bring forward a new version of the classic private-investigator series; this is a challenging endeavor when you consider how iconic the original was with Tom Selleck, but we’ve got a ton of faith in these guys to pull this off … and for good reason.
Remember that Lenkov has both Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver under his belt at this point, and he already tackled the especially-tough task of finding an heir apparent for Richard Dean Anderson. He pretty much was MacGyver (there were very few cast members who consistently appeared in that beyond a handful of episodes), so being able to fill that void was no easy task.
Judging from the Twitter response below, Lenkov absolutely understands the challenges that come with trying to fill a void left by some of the original Magnum PI actors.
While it’s not 100% certain that this reboot ends up being ordered to series, all signs point towards it at least getting a pilot and with that, there will be a new title character cast. There are two things to remember as signs for optimism here.
1. Selleck has given the show its blessing – We already discussed that when we first reported on the reboot at CarterMatt. Clearly, he’s confident that the project is in good hands.
2. There’s plenty of time to find the right person – The pilot won’t film more than likely for months so you can look around and get the right guy for the job. Don’t just cast based on name value, though; what really matters is someone who can deliver the right presence.
One thing we certainly wonder is if this new series could have some crossovers with Hawaii Five-0 or MacGyver, especially given that on the surface it feels perfect. We almost wonder why the show isn’t just launching out of one of those as a backdoor pilot to give it a little bit of creative juice almost from the start.
Is there anyone you want to see starring on the new Magnum PI?
