The Walking Dead season 8 premiere video: Daryl, Carol’s differing perspectives

Walking Dead season 8 premiere videoThe Walking Dead season 8 premiere is coming to AMC on Sunday night after a long hiatus, and with that war is here. Of course, every character has their own perspective on this.

War is violent. War is gruesome. War is where not everyone gets anything close to what they want. It is a cruel, brutal world, and this sort of violence sticks with you. It is one thing to murder lifeless zombies; it is another thing altogether to murder living people. It weighs on everyone differently and the latest sneak peek via the network is almost the perfect microcosm of this very thing. You get a great chance to see, after all, how some of these characters end up reacting to the circumstances around them.

For Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride), this one short minute presents us at CarterMatt with a dichotomy both in terms of who they are and also where they are. These are two characters who are both similar and yet different. They both excel at killing but react to it in very different ways. When it comes to Daryl, you have someone who has an established pattern of being able to let things roll off of his back. However, for Carol death hangs with her. This is in part why she isolated herself from much of the world during that polarizing season 7 storyline. As a character, it made sense for her to see if she could go away; unfortunately, at the tail end of it what she received more so than anything else was a reminder — this is a world where she needs to be that person. She may not like exposing the violent, terrible side of herself, but other people need it and even rely on it in some shape or form to get by.

The best contrast you get for these two characters within this sneak peek is when Daryl comments that the latest round of battle — this time presumably against walkers — will be fun. However, Carol comments soon after that it won’t be. She will do what needs to be done in the midst of the battle against Negan and the Saviors, but that doesn’t make her happy about it. Instead, the ghosts of the fallen will wander with her through the remainder of the season and beyond. Thanks to McBride’s present, you will feel and sympathize with much of what she endures along the journey every step of the way.
