Jessica Raine won’t be watching Call the Midwife season 7

While Call the Midwife season 7 is likely going to have quite a few viewers when it airs on the BBC in the new year, Jessica Raine won’t be one.

Speaking out about her former gig as Jennifer Worth in a new interview on The One Show, Raine made it clear that she doesn’t watch the series at this point — but that is really not all that much of a shock. You just have to look at it in this sense: After knowing everything behind the scenes for so many years it’s hard to be able to sit down, suspend belief, and watch. You’ve seen where all of the TV magic comes about. We imagine that it’s probably difficult to be able to view everything that you see through the same lens that the average viewer does.

While Raine doesn’t watch the show anymore, she did also give her thoughts with a bit of humor (per Digital Spy) on where she thinks that her character ended up — something that we actually do know a thing or two about thanks to a Vanessa Redgrave flash-forward during one of the Christmas Specials:

“She cycled off into the sunset, didn’t she? She was going into palliative care, which would have been a great, jolly storyline … I’d hope she’d be happily married and getting along with her job.”

The departure of Raine from the series really is what we would consider to be one of the biggest watershed moments of the entire series, given that at the time in which it happened it was rather hard to know one way or another if the show was going to continue and be anywhere near as successful. Luckily, we have since seen that there are some opportunities for the show to continue, its ratings are still strong, and the idea of Nonnatus House and all of the midwives within it means more than any one character. There have been a number of other characters who have also departed the show at one point or another, whether it be Miranda Hart’s Chummy or more recently Emerald Fennell’s Patsy. In due time, we presume that it’s possible that there could be even more cast shakeups — though we hope personally that there isn’t since we like some of the people who are a part of the show now.
