Outlander season 3: This Sam Heughan – Caitriona Balfe fanfiction video should make you laugh

Did you need a good laugh going into this weekend? We do think that there’s a new Outlander fanfiction video that will provide that and then some!

The video below features series stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe reading for Harper’s Bazaar (thanks to Outlander America for the find), and they go all in to read one particular excerpt from a story. It’s intense, it’s dramatic, and right at the culmination of the story they decide that it’s time for bed. This is, in a word, hilarious. Before you get to a serious and steamy episode in “A. Malcolm” airing at the end of the weekend, this for whatever reason feels like the perfect appetizer. It’s all done in good fun which makes it all the better.

In general we have a soft spot for watching actors/show creators lovingly read fanfiction, just because there are fewer pure expressions of love for a show than wanting to personally immerse yourself in the work. There are some very good fanfiction stories out there for many shows, and there are merits to some who choose to write it. It’s a great hobby for many, and for others a transition into original fiction down the road. Even if none of it is canon, who doesn’t want to use their imagination every now and then?

Just to give you more of a sense of how popular Outlander fanfiction is there are more than 1,300 stories on the popular website Archive of Our Own — some are based more on the show, whereas others are based directly on the Diana Gabaldon source material. There are some other websites out there where you can go to get your fanfiction fix, but this is a good snapshot of how popular the medium is as a celebration of the show and its characters.

We have a feeling that this is probably not the first time that someone has mentioned the show fanfiction to Balfe and Heughan — we’re not sure we picture them heading off to their trailers after a day of work and reading multiple stories, but they’ve got an awareness of it. (We’re including another fun video below for the heck of it — Martin Freeman talking about some of the racy Sherlock fan art that is out there. It’s not as good as seeing him sit there and read fanfiction but we do think it’s very entertaining in its own right. Sherlock is another one of those shows with a rich fanfiction archive.)
